Years before the formation of Fresh Start of California, Dustin Durnford, CEO and Co-Owner, suffered from severe substance abuse addiction. In January 2012, he committed his life to sobriety. Through his own journey, he discovered that his purpose in life is to help others overcome addiction, too.
Dustin’s ability to guide others towards positive, clean, and active lives through sobriety is the very core motivation of Fresh Start of California. First starting his career as a Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor at another treatment center, Dustin soon realized that many of the addicts he worked with had severely skewed concepts of what life in sobriety is like, and he saw it has his mission to change that.
Fresh Start of California, an Orange County rehab and detox, and Epic Transformations, an alumni program, were born. Since the founding of both, Dustin has focused on sharing that exuberant lifestyle by orchestrating the following activities and opportunities within the treatment programs:
Dustin’s passion to help others in irrefutable and has allowed him to fuel an unstoppable fire that is comprised of leaders on a mission to brighten the world.
As the President of Fresh Start of California, Preston Durnford brings passion, excitement, and adrenaline-filled adventures to the Orange County rehab and detox center. As a recovering heroin addict for more than 8 years, Preston empathizes with the addict and uses his personal experiences to connect with clients in a way that inspires sobriety.
Since founding Fresh Start of California with his brother, he has accomplished lifelong goals and has inspired those around him to do the same. Through his own journey in sobriety, he has discovered that all things are possible and obtainable if the spiritual side is exercised regularly.
When asked about his greatest joy in taking part in an addict or alcoholic’s journey toward sobriety, Preston responded:
“I love being part of something that helps people get back on their feet, helps them succeed, and repairs their families. These are all invaluable parts of my work here at Fresh Start of California. I would not trade it for anything in the world.”
Through FSC, Preston seeks to offer the gift he recovered through sobriety, another chance at a rad life.

His desire to work with individuals in substance abuse treatment facilities comes from firsthand experience of how and when the disease started, as well as the toll the disease can have on a family.
Often, people who suffer from addiction have a secondary diagnosis, such as depression, anxiety, or bi-polar disorder. In these cases, Dr. Rick works closely with psychiatry to stabilize the client’s mood and clear their thinking.
As the Clinical Director of Fresh Start of California, Dr. McGuckin carries a belief system that is founded on identification, support, and the education that individuals are able to turn their lives around and begin a new path.

Nick Clinton has been a fundamental member of our Orange County detox and rehab team for nearly two years but has more than four years of experience in the field of addiction treatment. His charismatic, energetic, and tenacious personality make him an asset to our treatment team. His tenacity and overwhelming kindness make him approachable and inspiring to all clients that move through our facility.
In addition, his personal experience with addiction allows him to connect with clients. For more than 7 years, Nick suffered from extreme addiction to heroin. When he had had enough, Nick sought treatment, achieved sobriety, and made it his goal to help others move away from the darkness and into the light that sobriety offers.
When asked about his favorite part of sobriety and working in the field of addiction treatment, Nick responded, “My favorite part of sobriety? Remembering things. Remembering life. I want others to have those memories. In my job, there is a moment when you see them [clients] pull themselves out of the mindset that nothing can get better. When they do, it’s like they see a light go on. That is the most rewarding part. At the end of the day, we are on the front lines of addiction.”
William Michael Erdman has been part of our Orange County detox and residential treatment team for more than a year and brings to our facility ample experience managing sober living homes. His serious yet caring and respectful demeanor provides a comfortable presence for clients.
At the age of 11, William began taking Xanax and smoking crack cocaine, swirling him into a world of addiction. Eventually, William found an AA program and a support group which helped pull him out of the darkness. His tragic yet impactful experience allows him to remain empathetic to clients seeking treatment at our facility.
When asked about his favorite part of working at Fresh Start of California, William responded, “I am blessed enough to have a job that truly matters. The best part about taking part in someone’s path towards sobriety is seeing the light come back on in a client’s eyes. You get to see their outlook on life change. There is something so pure about that moment!”
For more than two years, Kaylie Crane has served as a sober technician for Fresh Start of California’s Orange County addiction treatment team and has experience managing a sober living home. Her creative, positive, and humorous personality give her the ability to awake joy in clients. In doing so, she is able to show clients that sobriety is beautiful and does not have to be miserable. Currently, she is pursuing certifications to become a drug and alcohol counselor.
For most of her life, Kaylie struggled with addiction. She suffered the loss of both parents due to addiction. By the tender age of 13 years old, she herself was addicted to prescription painkillers and soon moved on to smoking meth and shooting up heroin by the age of 20 years old. This addiction continued for 5 years until Kaylie finally decided it was time for a fresh start.
She recalls the diligence and empathy of her counselors and therapists as she moved through detox and residential treatment. These memories now serve as her motivation to help people find recovery. When asked about her favorite part of working in the field of addiction treatment, Kaylie stated, “Seeing the light come on in others is the most beautiful thing in the world to me.”
Julia Spiros joined our addiction treatment team at Fresh Start of California in October 2019. Her compassion, understanding attitude, and her extensive medical background make her an asset to our facility.
From the ages of 13 though 26, Julia suffered from polysubstance use disorder, which is a psychological addiction to living in an intoxicated state without preference for any particular substance. As of now, Julia has achieved more than 7 years in sobriety.
Using her experiences, in combination with her strength and deep-rooted hope, she is able to impact the lives of clients by inspiring them to change their lives for the better. She hopes to make a lasting impact on the clients that move through and become family members of Fresh Start of California.
Dylan Herrick has served as a detox and residential technician at Fresh Start of California for more than a year but has more than three years of experience in the addiction treatment field. His optimistic personality offers a breath of fresh air to clients just entering detox at our facility. Dylan’s natural happy demeanor allows for clients to gravitate towards him, making him a friendly and personable asset to our team.
While Dylan did not personally struggle with addiction, each of his family members has, giving him firsthand experience in dealing with those in need of treatment. While creating his own path, Dylan accepted the opportunity to help others and views it as his mission to bridge the gap between addiction and true happiness.
Now, his goal within the addiction treatment field is to make the biggest difference possible. He states, “If I can save one person who grows up to have a family, that means it is no longer just one life; It means an entire family has been saved.”
In Dylan’s eyes, working in a detox and residential treatment facility is working on the front lines. He explains, “I get to be their stepping stool on their climb out of the hole, and I get to be standing right there with them as they kick their addiction to the curb and fight for a better life. There is not a ‘best part’ when it comes to helping people because the whole journey and outcome is the best part.”
Anthony Martin has served as a detox technician for Fresh Start of California since April 2019 and brings ample experience to our facility. His lightheartedness along with his empathetic nature allow clients to gravitate towards him and gives him the ability to show clients that life is beautiful and enjoyable without drugs and alcohol.
For more than 10 years, Anthony suffered from a life of addiction, struggling primarily with heroin and alcohol. When he moved through a detox and residential program, he was plagued with guilt due to the wreckage of his past, creating a deep-rooted fear of being able to love himself. Now, Anthony has achieved more than 4 years in sobriety and is dedicated to helping others remove themselves from the darkness of addiction.
Due to his personal experiences, Anthony is able to connect with clients on a personal level. His role at Fresh Start of California allows him to witness the transformation of a client entering detox to a person ready to take on the world.
When asked about his favorite part of his role as a detox technician, Anthony stated, “Watching a person start to smile, laugh, and enjoy life again is one of the many beauties with this line of work.”

Amber Ferrer joined our Orange County addiction treatment team in March 2019 and has proven to be an asset to our facility and clients. Her radiating energy and positivity is contagious, making it impossible for clients not to smile around her.
Each day, she reminds clients that pursuing sobriety is an uplifting experience that deserves praise. In doing so, she keeps clients focused on how much they have accomplished every day. Her greatest passion is to create a space where the clients believe in themselves and their ability to do anything they want in life.
When asked about her favorite part of working at Fresh Start of California, she stated, “Seeing a client’s personality bloom from when they arrive to when they leave is truly a wonderful thing to witness. There’s also a point in which clients discover new hobbies and activities and find they are talented at things they’ve never tried before—That is inspiring!”
This is my first job working in treatment and it has become a huge part of my life. I come into work everyday excited to work with the clients and help them in any way I can. This job has given me an opportunity to do my part to help people discover their true potential and to me that is the greatest satisfaction to get from a career.
Since August 2017, Andrew Milligan has served as a medical assistance and detox technician for Fresh Start of California’s addiction treatment team. His bright sense of humor, his ability to set healthy boundaries, and his bold presence help clients realize that sobriety is fun but requires diligent perseverance.
Andrew struggled with addiction for more than 10 years. This personal experience, though dark and treacherous, gives him the ability to relate to clients on a personal level. As a result, his goal is to help others achieve sobriety while pursuing a higher education.
When Andrew was asked what he liked most about his position at Fresh Start of California, Andrew responded, “The best part is seeing the light switch on in someone’s head. Clients that come in and want nothing to do with sobriety and leave with the wiliness to do the work— that is beautiful to me. I attribute everything good in my life to my sobriety and it is a blessing to be a part of other people’s journeys.”
